Após quase 15 anos, um novo álbum do Extreme! (Six - 2023)

Muito bem, aqui vai minha resenha para este álbum, ou pelo menos uma primeira tentativa dado que acabou de sair. Mas primeiro, para quem não me conhece, é justo dizer brevemente que o Extreme ocupa um lugar especial como minha banda favorita. Provavelmente a banda mais relevante que me inspirou a pegar uma guitarra e tocar, embora tenha havido momentos em que outros artistas ou bandas ocuparam esta posição. O que também vale acrescentar é que viajei para o exterior um par de vezes para vê-los ao vivo, mais notadamente nos Açores, Portugal em 2004 (isto merece seu próprio post numa próxima ocasião).

Ainda recapitulando, este ano em fevereiro depois de anos de muitas promessas de que os fãs teriam um álbum "em breve", o Extreme começou a lançar um teaser diferente a cada dia, e isso culminou no lançamento do single "Rise" e um anúncio de que o seu sexto álbum de estúdio Six seria lançado em junho. Isso com certeza chamou a atenção do mundo do rock e atraiu muita atenção da mídia especializada, principalmente devido ao solo de guitarra de cair o queixo de Nuno Bettencourt (eu sabia que ele poderia fazer isso, rs). Mais ou menos um mês depois, foram lançados os singles "#Rebel" e "Banshee", e mais recentemente "Other Side Of The Rainbow", e finalmente aqui estamos no dia do lançamento, quando todos os fãs estão agitados ouvindo, digerindo e dizendo o que pensam sobre o álbum, e também é para isso que estou aqui! 

 A primeira coisa a considerar, especialmente para quem não conhece o catálogo da banda, é que a intenção deles com cada um de seus discos é de abrir novos caminhos, levar sua música a novos rumos em maior ou menor grau, não se repetir, e eles costumam alertar em entrevistas para "esperar o inesperado". Antes de ouvir Six, dada a natureza dos primeiros singles lançados (mais voltados ao hard rock), devo dizer que baixei um pouco as minhas expectativas. Melhor dizendo, eu gostei dessas músicas e sabia que eram acima da média, mas pessoalmente faltava alguma coisa. Agora posso dizer que depois de ouvir todo o pacote sinto que eles guardaram o melhor para o final!

Uma das coisas mais notáveis é que Nuno assumiu mais responsabilidades nos vocais. Para aqueles familiarizados com seus trabalhos solo, onde ele já demonstrou bem estas habilidades, certamente é emocionante! E a grande notícia é que ele e Gary Cherone estão fazendo duetos em um bom número de músicas, em vez de dividir vocais entre as faixas. Isso é algo que não havia acontecido nesse nível em álbuns anteriores, portanto em Six ouvimos muito essa química única que é sem dúvida a maior força da banda.

Também vale mencionar que algumas das canções agora reveladas têm uma sonoridade industrial, moderna ou mais eletrônica, definitivamente diferente dos álbuns anteriores, especialmente “Saudades de Rock” que possui referências mais claras às influências de rock clássico da banda. No entanto, como alguns apontaram, isso não é totalmente novo se você considerar o projeto Tribe of Judah de Gary ou algumas coisas nos discos de Nuno antes da reunião definitiva do Extreme em 2007. E mesmo que eu ainda esteja processando algumas músicas como "X Out" e "Save Me", tenho que reconhecer a coragem e ousadia deles em colocá-las no álbum! Eles estão realmente ampliando o que a banda pode fazer e certamente vale a pena ouvir mais para deixar essas músicas crescerem.

Também escreverei alguns comentários específicos das músicas, o que espero agregue à resenha:

- "Banshee" para mim ainda é um dos melhores grooves do Extreme e deste disco, aquele que exige que aumentemos o volume e curtamos! Eles devem ter bebido um pouco de água da fonte do Motley Crue para esta, querendo ou não, hehe.

- "Other Side Of The Rainbow": ótima música mais pop mas que tem um bom andamento e consegue soar bem diferente de outras baladas que eles já fizeram.

- "Small Town Beautiful" é simplesmente deslumbrante! Vocais acertadíssimos.

- "The Mask": Estou curtindo bastante. O groove é perfeito de Pat (baixo) e Kevin (batera), assim como a troca vocal entre Nuno e Gary! A letra também se destaca.

- "Thicker Than Blood": uma das sonoridades modernas, poderia ser uma música do Tribe of Judah. Nuno trouxe de volta seu pedal octaver (usado em algumas músicas de Dramagods e Saudades) para o solo.

- "Save Me": uma música que muda de forma surpreendente após o comecinho, uma das maiores surpresas dentro de uma música.

- "Hurricane": outra performance vocal muito poderosa de Nuno e Gary sobre uma base acústica que remete ao Fleetwood Mac, e enriquecida pelo arranjo de cordas.

- "X Out": a mais estranha e difícil, mas com certeza está crescendo para mim, e Gary brilha nela (como em todo o álbum).

- "Beautiful Girls": uma antiga canção pop simples de Carl Restivo (ele tocou baixo no Extreme em alguns shows em 2004), que foi levada alguns passos adiante por Nuno e Gary com mais ótimos vocais e um divertido solo no estilo do Queen/Brian May.

- "Here's To The Losers": um hino instantâneo! Muito apropriado terminar o disco com isso, tendo como mais uma novidade para a banda um coro no refrão.

Acho que é isso por enquanto. Devo agradecer ao Extreme por dar aos fãs um presente especial e único! E por não ter medo de experimentar coisas novas aqui e ali, correndo o risco de não corresponder às expectativas de algumas pessoas. Até!

After almost 15 years, here's a new Extreme album! (2023's Six)

Alright, here goes my review for this album, or at least a first attempt given its freshness. But first, for those unaware of where I'm coming from, it's fair to briefly say that Extreme holds a special place as my favorite band. Probably the most relevant band that inspired me to pick up a guitar and play, even though there have been times when other artists or bands maybe held that top spot. One last thing to quickly add is that I have traveled overseas a couple of times to catch them live, most notably in the Azores, Portugal in 2004, which deserves its own post anytime.

Ok, so this year on February, after years of many promises that the fans would get an album "soon", Extreme began to release a different teaser each day, and that culminated on the release of single "Rise" and an announcement that their 6th studio album Six would be released in June. That surely shook the rock world and got them lots of attention from specialized media, most notably due to Nuno Bettencourt's jaw-dropping guitar solo (I knew he could do that, lol). A month or so later they dropped singles "#Rebel" and "Banshee", and more recently "Other Side Of The Rainbow", and finally here we are on release day when all fans are hectic listening, digesting and saying what they think of the album, which is also what I'm here for!

The first thing to consider, specially for those unfamiliar with the band's catalog, is that their intention with each of their records has been to cover new ground, to take their music more or less to new directions, to not repeat themselves, and they've warned the fans to "expect the unexpected". Before I heard Six, given the nature of the first singles released (more hard rock oriented), I have to say I had lowered my expectations a bit. I mean, I liked those songs and I knew they were above average, but personally something was missing. Now I can say that after hearing the whole package, I feel they saved the best for last!

One of the most notable things is that Nuno took over more vocal duties. For those familiar with his solo works, where he showcased these abilities, I'm sure this is exciting! And the great news is that he and Gary Cherone are duetting on a good number of songs, instead of splitting the task. This is something that hadn't happened at this level on previous albums, therefore, we get to hear a lot of this unique chemistry that is arguably the band's biggest strength.

It's also worth mentioning that some of the now revealed songs have an industrial, modern or more electronic sound, definitely different than their previous albums, specially "Saudades de Rock" which had clearer nods to their classic rock influences. However, as some have pointed, this is not entirely new if you consider Gary's project Tribe of Judah or some stuff on Nuno's records before the Extreme definite reunion in 2007. And even though I'm still processing some songs like "X Out" and "Save Me", I have to acknowledge their courage and boldness to put them on the album! They're really stretching out what the band can do and it's certainly worth some listens to let those songs grow.

I'll also write some song-specific comments that should enhance the review:

- "Banshee" for me still has one of their best grooves, one that requires the listener to crank it up and party! They must have drunk some water from the Motley Crue source, willingly or not, hehe.

- "Other Side Of The Rainbow": great pop song that has a good pace and sounds quite different than previous ballads by them.

- "Small Town Beautiful" is just stunning! Voices spot on.

- "The Mask": I'm crazy on this one. The groove is perfect from Pat and Kevin, as well as the vocal trade-off between Nuno and Gary! Lyrics also stand out for me.

- "Thicker Than Blood": one of the modern sounding ones, could be a Tribe of Judah tune. Nuno dug up his octaver pedal (used in a couple of songs from Dramagods and Saudades) for the solo.

- "Save Me": a clear contrasting intro, one of their biggest curve balls ever within a song.

- "Hurricane": another very powerful vocal performance from both Nuno and Gary over a Fleetwood Mac-tinged acoustic foundation and enriched by the string arrangement.

- "X Out": the strangest and most difficult one, but it is surely growing for me, and Gary shines on it (as he does on the whole album).

- "Beautiful Girls": a former simple pop song by Carl Restivo (he got to play bass in Extreme for a few dates in 2004), which was taken some steps further by Nuno and Gary with more great vocals and a fun Queen-ish solo.

- "Here's To The Losers": anthemic! Very fitting to finish off the record with this, having another new thing for the band with the choir or chant on the chorus.

I guess this is it for now. I must thank Extreme for giving the fans a special and unique gift! And for not being afraid to try new things here and there, at the risk of not living up to the expectations of some people. Peace and out!
